Best Volunteer Opportunities in Providence, RI

November 10th, 2022 by

Children believe that it’s better to receive than to give, but as we get older and wiser, we begin to understand why it’s been said that the opposite is true. Giving our time and effort as a volunteer in the Providence area not only makes our community stronger and helps the lives of others, but it also does some fantastic things for you. Choosing to volunteer is choosing to make your world better, make new friends, earn respect, and increase your sense of purpose.

We hope you value giving back to your community as much as we at Nucar Toyota of North Attleboro love helping the many communities around us. If you do, and you’re wondering how to get involved as a volunteer in the Providence, Rhode Island, area, here are some incredible volunteer organizations and opportunities within your reach.

It can be hard to figure out the challenges of our complex world and make the best decisions as adults. Still, it’s even harder to do that when growing up without guidance. Many young people in our Providence communities have no one to turn to for advice and help with the difficult task of moving from childhood to adulthood, from surviving to thriving.

Mentor Rhode Island, in Warwick, is dedicated to investing in the people of our communities by caring for our youth through mentoring opportunities. Adult volunteers will receive orientation or training to become mentors to youths in the Providence school system. The need is great, with hundreds of youths already on waiting lists for mentor relationships.

Location: 2065 Warwick Ave. Unit 1, Warwick, RI.

Pete & Andy’s Food Pantry

So many of us that live as students, employees, and entrepreneurs in the beautiful and abundant communities of the Providence area have no idea what it’s like to be truly hungry. We buy and cook the foods we like, we occasionally dine at nice restaurants, and we can “grab a bite” any time we need to. Even in our wealthy cities and suburbs, there are those around us who struggle to keep themselves and their families fed.

Pete & Andy’s Food Pantry was established in the 1970s to eliminate food insecurity in the Mt. Pleasant community of Providence. This food pantry is an outreach ministry of St. Peter’s & St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Volunteers interested in feeding less-fortunate families are needed to unload delivery trucks, register guests, and help families get the food they need. Bilingual volunteers are appreciated, especially those who speak Spanish. There are also opportunities to help with Pete & Andy’s Thrift Store.

Location: 70 Pemberton St., Providence, RI.

Beautiful Day

Getting enough food isn’t the only thing we often take for granted. A secure, stable home has been taken away from many families who have ended up in the Providence area. Many of these displaced people are children who don’t know what the next day will bring. Refugees are people that need someone to give them a chance to resettle and a place to rebuild their lives.

Beautiful Day is a business built around providing a place where refugees can work and train to gain the confidence and skills needed to make a new home and become an established part of our communities. Beautiful Day has been hiring refugees for over a decade to make their award-winning granola and coffee. It is always looking for volunteers who can help with community outreach and awareness, fundraising, information technology assistance, distributing and selling its products at places like farmer’s markets, and mentoring refugees of all ages.

Location: 66 Benefit St., Providence, RI.

Mae Organization

It’s possible that, as human beings, mental wellness is our most precious gift. Mental health challenges are terrifying and can lead to significant life changes. Many of those living lives of homelessness have arrived there because of mental health issues. Being homeless makes it extremely difficult for them to get the help they need.

Mae Organization (Mental wellness — Assistance — Empower) was established in 2008 in Cranston to care for people who find themselves sleeping on the streets of Rhode Island. Mae Organization’s desire is to work with homeless individuals to identify the root causes of their condition while providing them with food, shelter, and clothing. Volunteers are a crucial part of making this happen in several ways, from cooking to fundraising to resource management.

Location: 1221 Reservoir Ave., Cranston, RI.

Dysautonomia Support Network

Most of us have never heard the word “dysautonomia.” Yet, that doesn’t make it any less of a problem for the people in our Providence communities struggling with its effects. Dysautonomia is a way to describe how a part of our bodies can have trouble doing something it’s supposed to do without us having to think about it. This includes crucial functions such as heartbeat, breathing, steady blood pressure, bladder control, skin temperature, hormone levels, and digestion.

The Dysautonomia Support Network grew out of a small group of affected people looking for community and support for themselves and their families. It now provides hope for more than 20,000 people across the nation who struggle with this rare autonomic nervous system disorder. The Dysautonomia Support Network uses volunteers to keep a sizeable online community connected, raise awareness in our local and medical communities, and produce educational material about dysautonomia.

Location: 140 Pitman St. Apt. 106, Providence, RI.

Don’t forget, these are just a few of the many rewarding volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference in the communities of Providence. And there are many more in the Providence area that might suit your gifts and talents even better. If you know of a fantastic volunteer organization you think we should have included, don’t hesitate to let us here at Nucar Toyota of North Attleboro know, so we can help spread the word. But no matter where and how you decide to serve your community as a volunteer, you’ll discover that giving is better than receiving.
